열매
남국의 섬에는 집과 거리, 정원, 어디서든 열매가 달려있는 나무를 볼 수 있었다.
허약한 가지에서 떨어진 열매와 사뭇 다르게 보이는 건 나무와 가지에 단단히 달려 있기 때문이다.
어느날 사람이, 가족이, 소녀와 소년이 열매처럼 보인다.
사람에게서 누군가와 비슷한 모습과 닮은 향기를 가진다는 것은 신기하면서 두려운 일이기도 하다.
그런 열매를 보면서 그동안 체념했던 것들이 떠오르고, 내게 삶에 대한 간절함이 있다는 사실을 깨닫는다.
한밤에 어둠속에서 땅으로 떨어진 열매를 줍는다.

여행
우여곡절 끝에 도착한 섬에서 나는 냄새는 어떤 시절로 나를 안내 한다.
일상을 벗어나 떠났던 긴 여행은 특히, 그림을 하는 일에서 어떤 전환기를 맞게 한다.
여행은 무심을 향해 가는 휴식과 같다. 그 휴식은 풍경 너머로 사라져 버린 것을 불러들인다.
그동안 나와 세상을 향해 두 눈을 가린 채 이야기를 하지 않으려 했던 것은, 어떤 피안의 견고한 세계가 있다고 믿고 싶었기 때문인지 모르겠다.

풍경
풍경은 고정되어 있지 않다. 남쪽의 끝에서 매년 불어오는 태풍 속에서 세상을 삼켜 버릴 것 같은 불안함을 보았고, 지인이 권해준 남국선원의 끝없는 적막함에서 투명한 세상을 만났다.
맑고 투명한 날부터 바람섬의 풍경이 부조리한 세상과 어쩔 수 없는 순간과 일상의 결이 뒤섞인다. 활경이 그동안의 관념을 깨운다.

모빌, 파편
바닷가를 산책한다.
수면위로 솟아나는 화산석의 틈새에 온갖 물건이 박혀있고, 하얀 백사장속 여기저기에 아무렇게 널부려져 있다.
언젠가의 태풍에 뿌리 채 뽑힌 나무는 하얗게 바랜 거대한 몸뚱이처럼 유유히 떠다니고,분주하게 활어를 손질하던 칼질이 도마 위에 오롯이 남아있다.
너울과 부딪힌 깨진 술병은 눈부신 백사장 표면에서 부드러운 알맹이로 빛을 더하고, 신발 한 짝은 어디로 갔는지 포말 안에서 오르내린다.
소년의 부러진 장난감, 약병, 광택이 날아간 플라스틱의 껍질, 누군가의 생명줄 이었을 구명복, 시대를 알 수 없는 유물의 조각, 열매, 어선의 부속품들, 어망, 곳곳에 널려있는 생선 대가리와 단단한 비늘, 아직 식지 않은 비릿한 내장,……대륙과 태평양에서 조류를 타고 흘러들었을 조각과 파편에서 묘한 상상이 피어나고, 그 속에 얽힌 이야기가 귓가에 웅성거린다.
지난 5월은 너무나 잔인했다.
가슴이 내려앉은 사람들이 멍한 눈으로 한사람씩 모여들었다. 서로가 위로를 필요로 했다.
아무것도 아닌, 쓸모없는 것으로 움직이는 조각을 만들어 보기로 한다.
그것은 잊혀짐을, 어떤 희망을 위한 놀이였다.

소년, 만나다.
잊고 있었다. 소년이 나고 자란 곳이 섬이었다는 것을…
소년은 이른 아침이면 바다로 향해 난 대문을 열고 근사한 날개를 가진 세상에서 가장 빠른 배를 구경하는 것이 하루의 일과였다.
소년은 하얀 포말을 가르며 미끄러지는 모습에서 견디기 힘든 그리움과 공포를 잠시 잊을 수 있었다.
육지와 섬을 이어주는 아주 높고 근사한 다리가 있었지만, 소년은 그 다리를 건널 때마다 느낀 현기증과 공포가 있었다.
몇 일간 귓가를 파고드는 바람소리가 이어진다.
끝날지 모르는 소리는 누군가의 탄성으로 바뀌고, 사라져 버리거나, 망각을 불러들인다.
삶에서 끝내 알아내지 못한 것이 있기 마련이다.
그것은 하나의 상처로 끝나고 아무는 것이 아니라 가슴 한켠에 순간순간 남아있다.
까맣게 타버린 돌, 몸을 가누기 힘든 거센 바람, 높은 너울과 부서지는 하얀 포말, 비릿한 냄새, 까만 바다의 적막, 그리고 돌아오지 않은 사람과 사람들.
소년은 풍경과 만나고 자신의 그림자를 따라갈 뿐이었다.
소년에겐 끝나지 않을 것만 같은 내일이 있다.
