김현주(ex-media) : 보행(步行)도시
“기능주의적 조직화는 발전을 특권화함으로써 도시를 가능케 하는 조건인 공간 자체를 망각케 했다.
이리하여 공간은 과학적, 정치적 테크놀로지의 맹점이 되었다. 이것이 개념 도시가 작용하는 방식이다. [..] 보행자의 움직임은 사실상 도시를 만들어내는 실재 체계이며 보행자들이야말로 도시를 공간화하는 주체이다.
공간은 방향, 속도, 시간의 벡터를 고려해야 하기에 움직임의 앙상블에 의해 실제화된다.”

작가노트
전시는 드세르토(Michel de Certeau)의 일상의 실천(The Practice of Everyday Life, 1984)에서 언급한 공간적 실천으로서의 작가의 도시읽기이다.
또한 개인의 욕망과 국가적 기획의 역작인 한국의 대규모 아파트 단지에서 작가가 느꼈던 생경한 풍경, 그 밑에 이미 소멸되었거나, 곧 사라질 공간들이 전하는 기억과 불편함에 대한 기록이다.
가상 현실 속에 건설될 것만 같은 기계적인 이미지의 수직의 건물들, 인간이 살 것 같지 않은 그곳은 과거를 매장하고, 도려내어, 거의 아무런 인류학적 흔적도 남겨두지 않는다.
마치 이곳은 러닝머신으로 우리의 몸이 훈육되도록 하는데 매우 적합해 보인다. 우리의 공간과 신체는 끊임없는 거대 수술 중이다. 전시는 개념도시와 보행도시의 개념적 대립 구조 속에 2011년부터 2015년까지 지금동, 별내, 가제울 등 서울과 수도권, 강원도 철암과 같은 지방 소도시까지 뉴타운과 신개발을 위해 철거 중에 있던 공간의 변화에 대한 다년간의 사진과 영상 도큐멘테이션을 중심으로 한다.
또한 작가는 상징적 의미에서 작품 [보행기계]를 통해 현대인의 신체 훈육과 드세르토의 공간적 실천으로서의 보행의 모순성을 언급하고자 한다.
마주하는 곳에 구글어스의 과거 사진들을 모아 영상으로 제작된 공간의 기록을 조망하는 [계획자의 의자 – 이카루스의시선]이 설치되어있다.
디지털 환경과 컨셉도시에 익숙한 우리의 신체가 점점 더 훈육되고 감금되고 있다고 보자면, 어쩌면 드세르토의 보행은 제대로 된 저항적 공간 실천이 아닌가?

Kim’s work varies from experimental video, computer-generated images, robotic art as well as interactive installation. Her computer interactive installations and performance projects deal with posthuman conditions in the techno-cultural society, exploring the notion of identities in such an environment with ubiquitous digital technologies.
Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including “Digifesta” at the Gwangju Biennale Hall (Korea, 2010), “Continuum” at the George Segal Gallery( NJ, 2009), ImageMovementSound Festival (NY, 2005 ), Sixth International Digital Art Exhibit and Colloquium(Cuba, 2004), Toronto Online Film Festival(Canada, 2002), International Audio Visual Creation Festival of Navarre (Spain,2002) and ”Media[Less] Medium” at the Boston Center for the Arts(MA, 2002).
Kim has won first place in the juried exhibitions at the 119 gallery (MA, 2008) and Ciao gallery (WY, 2009). Kim studied Industrial Engineering in Pohang University of Science and Technology and got her MFA at the Computer Art at the Transmedia Department of Syracuse University.
Kim is currently teaching digital moving images production and interactive media at the Korean German Institute of Technology(South Korea), also previously in University of Massachusetts Lowell(USA)
